Hidden in the depths of fast-flowing streams in Northern Japan lurk long Asian "dragons" with an ancient pedigree. The Japanese Giant Salamander is a prehistoric beast that has survived unchanged for 30 million years, yet it strongly resembles the first amphibians to walk on land over 300 million years ago.

I saw a Discovery Channel program that measured and weighed the largest known salamander Megalobatrachus japonicus, now 50 years old. It weighed 22kg, and was JUST under 2m. Saw it with me own eyes!

Apparently they have found heaps that are a metre long, but this daddy has been protected so it has grown to its heart's content. They keep growing as they get older. Wonder how big this snappy big mouthed monster will get to!
