Readers, today I came apon a thread at another site by a Person well known in herp circles. This person is often called "the butcher of melbourne'
for his practice and pro-stance of strapping fridge chilled snakes to a peice of wood with nails and rubber bands and cutting out their venom glands without any anesthetic whatsoever! The thread is entitled

"Tongs - complaints - cruelty and smokescreens, Illegal mutilation of snakes"

The Author is ofcourse none other than Raymond hoser!

he writes:

QUOTE
Dear all, I know some people here complained re a tong handler in NSW as depicted on Youtube some weeks back.
I also did and so far have heard nothing from the NSW Authorities, which I find alarming.
Complaints to DSE here re tongs don't seem to be making progress and I had a long
conversation with them on this today and gave them a serve about this.
DSE had called me re an upcoming VCAT gig where snakebusters are fighting for the right of the general public to have "Hands on" at reptile demonstrations.
Newbies, snakehandler and others have lobbied DSE had to remove these rights and this may well expand to a removal of the rights of all private people to keep herps as happened in the 1970's in NSW.
Having seen what happened there back then, we are fighting tooth and nail for the rights of herpers.
Strange coincidence how the so-called anti-venomoiders are also the "pro-tongers", and we view the anti-venomoid movement in it's present form as a smokescreen to draw attention away from the cruelty inflicted by tongs, noting that we bitched and moaned about this well before the anti-Hoser antivoiders surfaced.
Just today I spoke with another man (member of public so to speak) who attempted to grab a Tiger Snake with tongs. He told me the snake got away, minus half it's flesh, then bit the dog, it died and then the snake followed suit as a result of the tongs.
That was after a $2000 vet bill in a vain attempt to save the dog.
Yes, he'd seen tongs used by Bruce George on Foxtel and hence got the message that this was "the way" to handle snakes ... sending the wrong message so to speak. So the man gave me a serve as he thought I was associated with him, because he stole and used my trademark name "snakebuster"! The man was upset that the tongs were garbage and his prized mutt died. I sided with him and a few hours later when DSE phoned me and whined about me holding more than one snake at a time with the allegation "it sends the wrong message ... people may impersonate you and get bitten and die", I fired back and drew the battle back to where it should be and that is the wrong message sent by the tong handling butchers.
I also reminded the DSE man of four other (rival) demonstrators here in Vic who recently have been to hospital with life threatening bites (Anti-venom etc), showing that if people copied them then they'd end up dead and how DSE hadn't moved on them!
On another level, we have loads of signatures for a petition on tongs and suggest those who agree that they are cruel and barbaric should also lobby the powers that be to stop their unlawful use to kill and maim snakes.
Please let me know anyone if you heard from the NSW people re the brown snake butcher on Youtube or in terms of the illegal tong grabbers in Vic.
Mods, if this post is "too political" for here, please delete - thanks.
ALL THE BEST

Now while I agree with his stance on tongs in inexperienced hands, his post, especially the title, reeks of hypocrasy!! He must have huge balls!
What do you think and what is your opinion on the use of tongs?

Persoanlly, I have never seen damage done by tongs, so I can't comment on their use. But today while watching "Snake Busters" with Bruce George (gotta love that guy) on animal planet, i saw a genius invention. It was a pair of tongs, and the top of the tongs (the bit that moves up and down when you pull the lever) was partially oval shaped, and the bottom metal bit had rubber on it. Going from one end of the oval shaped piece, to the other was an elastic strap. So the snake was being pressed on rubber buy a band, and they got held in position fairly good. It was probably the best set of tongs I have ever seen, and I am going to try and get myself a pair.

Those are an excellent idea, I dont see how you could injure a snake with those unless you clubbed it to death. You should post that on that other site mate! Brilliant!
