Not only we cant import, we cant keep sad.gif I't is unfair that eople can keep exotic bird with desieses like bird flu around.

ReptileMan27- 11-02-2006
That stinks sad.gif, but atleast you have a heck of alot of native herps and inverts to keep, far more then we have here sad.gif.

Thats True! Infact If Im not mistaken, Australia has the greatest diversity of reptile fauna anywhere in the world!

Spike, don't forget it hasn't been very long that we've been allowed to import birds and that probably only happened to allow the latest strains of commercial poultry to come in legally. Every new strain of better egg layer or meat bird that was developed overseas magically appeared here - along with the health risks that large scale smuggling involved. Better to make it legal. Once they privatised the quarantine supervision the volume of trade was bound to increase and other types of birds were allowed in. (As were the diseases - pigeon keepers now have a miniature pharmacy attached to their lofts just as they do in America.)
Once exotic reptiles become legal to keep, import restrictions will be removed so that a profit can be made. Let's hope that when that happens we don't bring in too many Cane Toad types.

Theres a downside to everything, but Ive always thought if they allowed imports with compulsary quarantine all at the importers expense, it should be a saftey net.
Only those prepared for the $outlay and extensive quarantine would do it, should cut back the flood.
Im sure they could think of other means to keep track of imported animals so they couldnt be lost in the wild.
