Does anyone own a boyds forest dragon?

I am thinking about the next lizard I want to own (already laugh.gif ), and I think the boyds forest dragon is the coolest looking lizard! I haven't really read much about them yet....

I am not even sure if I am able to keep them here, or if they are rare etc etc etc..

So....anyone? cool.gif

Not so much Rare as Expensive! about $600 each for hatchlings i think. A very nice lizard though, might be tempramental like spinipes (angleheads, sthrn form)
Parko can tell you what spinipes are like.
Personally I have enough lizards, snakes are much less work. LOl

I agree Raz, Boyds are definately one of the best looking Dragons around, the best actually in my opinion. I intend to upgrade to class 2 and keep these guys one day very soon. At the moment i have Southern forest dragons which are very closely related to Boyds and i think they make for great experience before keeping Boyds. Are you in Victoria? If so then unfortunately you cant have them, but in NSW they are class 2 category 1 which i dont believe is a drama to upgrade to if you've been keeping for at least 2 yrs. At least i dont think it is difficult to upgrade...

I am in the ACT actually.

I found out that here, they are catagory C lisence.

This means that I need 2 years experience in an exempt/cat A reptiles and 1 year experience in cat B, which is your snakes like diamonds etc.

they are expensive, but I think they will be worth it.... Now I just have to play the waiting game, but I am sure the other reptiles will suffice and take up my time while i wait... patiently blink.gif biggrin.gif

geez, reptiles are an expensive hobby eh! lucky my boyfriend is getting interested too cool.gif

Yeah some reptiles are very expensive, but then again some are a lot of work to keep and breed hence the breeder would rightly feel like they should charge more. Boyds would take a bit of good research first i believe, i've found with Spinipes(forest dragons or angleheaded dragons) that they can take quite a bit of caring for at times, sulking and going off food if things aren't just right but once you get it all happening they become simple enough, can you keep them on your license? They look fairly simillar but not quite as spectacular as a boyds.(I have a thread in the dragon forum on them if you haven't seen pics of this awesome species before)
Yeah it is a great bonus if your partner is into reptiles also, my wife loves them so it makes it easier for me to say ''hey dont you think we really need another Bredli or tree snake or forest dragon or gecko etc etc, the phone bill can wait and the kids aren't really that hungry''.

Raz- 10-25-2005

hahaha, meanwhile the reptiles are eating better than the kids laugh.gif wink.gif

Yeah I want to do some research on them before I get them, I have a while to go yet though. I think the anglehead dragons are catagory C also.

I still have to choose which snake I want first. Diamond python or Darwin... I think I am leaning more towards the darwin, but I will talk to my uncle and others about which would be better for a first snake... That way I can read up on them as much as possible before diving in. biggrin.gif

Hopefully it won't be as confusing as the different info from all directions you recieve about bearded dragons! laugh.gif

"Get the Darwin, Get the darwin" ! ph34r.gif

Parko- 10-25-2005

I think Bredli have better temperaments than Darwins and are easier to care for than Diamonds,(and look better tongue.gif ) but it is personal choice and preference.
I know what u mean about different info from too many sources making things difficult. I like to get my solid basic info from one or two ppl only who keep the species i want, then after i've kept the species for a while start to open up to other opinions, by that time i feel confident enough to decipher good advice from bad.

Raz- 10-27-2005

I don't know if I can keep a bredli on catagory B license.

I think its childrens python, spotted python, darwin and diamond....

I can look into it more by calling and asking about certain snakes... but I would have to make a list with their name and scientific name, and ask what cat they are on.

So feel free to make a list of snakes you think will be good for a beginner biggrin.gif

hey raz were do u live that u need all these different lecenses, a childrens python were i live u dont even need a permit 4, i live in darwin by the way
i dont really think darwins are starting pythons but ive never had 1 b4 ive just heard that they can be a bit picky with the food and the last thing u want is a picky snake as begginer
but i think inny thinks they are good as beginer one since he says "Get the Darwin, Get the darwin" ! .... laugh.gif lol

Raz- 10-27-2005

I live in the ACT....

well.. I already have a picky dragon... lol, then I have another that will try to take you hand with the food... and also, if I move a plant or something, he will try to eat it... rolleyes.gif he is the biggest pig ever! The little one is starting to dig in though, just have to find something else that it likes cos he hates crickets, will not even look at them.

What about diamonds? can they be picky?

I am not really a fan of the childrens.... I heard they are ok starter snakes though, this correct?

_Daniel_- 10-27-2005

yeh childrens python's are good starters hence the name

im not sure about diamonds, i have neva heard anythin bad about them b4 but they are more expensive

Raz- 10-27-2005
