I have to clean their little cages out soon, and I'm a little scared I might lose one of them! - They're so quick, and climb the walls and jump out so fast! The other spider who I didn't get a photo of - just shed and is in hiding till his skin drys out, is a completely different colour. When I got them they were as big a 5 cent piece. Now the one in the pic is about the size of a 50 cent piece, can't wait to see how the other one is. After a shed they seem to be triple their size - which is just amazing!!

can u handle spiders?
they look intrestin, if i got thats sort of thing i think i would get a scorpian

foxysnake- 11-04-2005

Hey ASL, I do have a scorpion (well its my boyfriends - but I look after it and have kinda claimed it). I have a thread with pics of scorpions in this section. You're not suppose to handle the spiders, but I have to say I've had the little guys in my hands. Seeing as I got them so small, when I was feeding them etc they would try and escape and they do it so quickly you don't really have time to grab something to pick them up with. I just scoop them up in my hands - havn't been bitten yet. Our scorpion is up the duff at the moment and should have a heap of babies by the end of the year - can't wait. She didn't eat for a couple of months and now she eats a cricket each night. I'm looking at getting 3 of those giant cockroaches as pets too. - I want to build a bookcase with a twist. - So when you walk into my house theres a really nice looking bookcase with all freaky things in it. - Got the scorpion, 2 spiders, some geckoes, have to get some more geckos and those cockroach things. - I'm petrified of cockroaches personally, but I've convinced myself these aren't like the normal feral roaches and heaps of peopl have them as pets.

Forgot to say, the bird eating spiders I've got grow to the size of a man's hand. - So do the big roaches.

soundsood ive looked at ur scorps they are nice
wen u feed do u let it hunt or hand feed with tweezers?
id love to c pics of the roaches and other gekz wen u get them, but i am more into snakes n lizards than roaches n stuff but they still facinate me

After we got her, I tried with a pair of forceps to get her to feed. And the only way she would was if I stirred her up a bit and than she'd 'sting' the forceps and grab the food. She dosn't really do that anymore - so I put in a cricket either alive or with its head squished a bit. I'm definetely more into pythons, but I'd like to have a collection of wierd things too. I love lizards, but after having blue tongues, I'd only keep lizards in an outdoor aviary (providing they were adults, I'd have to keep them inside till they're at least yearlings I guess). The roaches are apparently really good to handle and actually tame down a bit too. Check out this link below:

They actually sell insect kits, looks cool. But the roaches are the only things that actually stay alive for a few years, all the others die after 7 or 10 weeks.

Stuff of nightmares! ph34r.gif

foxysnake- 11-04-2005
I wouldn't say nightmares! That's a pretty cool spider! I've had the chance to buy a full size bird eating spider, but I knocked it back. I figure it'd be better to have the spiders as they grow big, so I know what they're capable of etc and watching them grow would be pretty cool. I'd probably get a huge one and get bitten by it or something! after my 2 hit adulthood I'l probably feel comfortable with buying a few more adults.

Got a question for ya Foxy, do aussie tarantulas kick hairs? (urtricating hairs, i think there called)

foxysnake- 11-04-2005
Not that I know of. I'm still new to spider keeping too. I'l have to ask some friends of mine how are a bit more knowledgeable for you.

foxysnake- 11-05-2005
ok, well aussie tanrantulas are 'old world species' and don't kick hairs, only 'new world species' do and they're all exotic - we have none here.
